School Nurse - Part-Time Position
Overview:
The NERSBA Early College is seeking applicants for a Part-time School Nurse Position. PLEASE NOTE: This is a grant-funded position for one year with the potential for a one-year extension.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The NERSBA Early College School Nurse will be expected to:
- respond to emergency medical situations involving both non-handicapped and
physically and mentally handicapped students and perform necessary medical work in
accordance with established protocols for Basic Life Support.
- administer necessary emergency medical care.
- administer or supervise the administration of medications to students with physician or
health care provider orders.
- perform prescribed treatments or supervise routine treatments with physician order, as
governed by the Nurse Practice Act.
- assign, direct, supervise and ensure adherence to established medical protocols, policies
and procedures.
- assist and advise in resolving problems as non-routine situations arise.
- make decisions regarding the delegation of nursing activities to unlicensed persons
based on the Nurse Practice Act.
- oversee and participate in health screening of students as needed.
- ensure that students have current immunizations.
- maintain health and medical records of students.
- assist and advise school staff in recognition of health problems in students.
- serve as a liaison between the school and private medical professionals, clinics, and
human services agencies.
- monitor daily health checks of students.
- make appropriate referrals for professional services.
- contact parents to advise of observed health or medical problems and/or emergency
incidents.
- make or assist parents in making necessary medical appointments, as necessary.
- develop a nursing care plan for any student with special needs.
- make oral presentations to various groups as part of in-service training, including such
topics as first aid, emergency care and treatments for specific health problems or
medical emergencies.
- counsel individual students, groups of students, parents, school staff, etc. about specific
health concerns, as appropriate
- assist school administrators and appropriate committees in developing health education
programs for school staff, parents and students.
- serve as the primary liaison between school and private medical professionals and
clinics, human services agencies and other institutions or agencies providing services to
students and/or their families.
- advise medical professionals and others, as appropriate, of students' medical histories,
incidents, treatments, etc.
- provide records, as appropriate.
- prepare and maintain comprehensive notes.
- record and create reports of medical evaluations, emergency incidents, treatments,
consultations, etc., to document students' medical histories, nursing activities,
treatment provided, etc.
- serve on various school and/or school system committees, attend meetings and
participate in other activities of such groups as appropriate.
- attend seminars, conferences, workshops, classes, lectures, etc. as appropriate, to
enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in the field of nursing,
with emphasis on care of students.
- review professional journals
- attend association and professional meetings.
- maintain contacts with nursing and medical professionals to facilitate exchange of
information.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:
Bachelor's degree in nursing and 3 to 5 years of professional nursing experience, including
knowledge of potential health problems of school-age and adolescent children, both healthy
and those with chronic conditions and handicapping conditions OR any equivalent combination
of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
GEOGRAPHIC LOCALE:
The NERSBA Early College is located in northeastern North Carolina with Williamston,
Plymouth, Washington, Greenville, Rocky Mount, Elizabeth City and the Outer Banks in close
proximity to the campus which has central facilities in Jamesville, North Carolina within the
Roanoke River basin which supports one of America’s most diverse ecosystems and abundant
natural resources.
SALARY:
Based on degree, credentials and experience.
